Bone Music by Stephen Coates

Association for Recorded Sound Collection Journal. No. 55 (2), Fall 2024. 314-316. Read.

As an enthusiastic compendium of materials, Bone Music offers an accessible point of entry to the topic of Soviet x-ray recordings and the complex politics and subject positions of the people who created and consumed them. While the book is not rigorous enough to be judged by academic standards, it promises to enthrall readers with its presentation of grotesque makeshift objects and the visceral emotions they induce. This “half-hidden history” (p. 7) will surely remain hidden no longer. Read the full review here.
